Vaginal white discharge is a natural phenomena where a woman experiences a minimal amount of white discharge whether pregnant or not. This is very much common as through this process the cells of cervix and vagina renew themselves. This discharge comprises of fluid and dead cells. However this discharge increases at the time of pregnancy.Leukorrhea is the medical term used for vaginal discharge.
Sometimes it happens when the white discharge of pregnancy is misunderstood as the normal one and the possibility of vaginal infection is fully ignored.
If infection occurs in early pregnancy or first trimester, the chances of missing the baby or abortion arises. If the infection occurs during the last trimester, pre mature rupture of membrane may occur, which leads to the increased possibility of early delivery.
So here,it is very much important to differentiate and understand the difference between the normal pregnancy white discharge and the infectious one.In case the infection occurs,it is very much important to consult your gynecologist and get it treated so that it does not affects the baby.
HOW TO DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN NORMAL DISCHARGE AND INFECTIOUS DISCHARGE
Normal white vaginal discharge is watery, slippery, milky white or transparent and odourless.Normal discharge is accompanied with no itchiness or irritation.
Infectious discharge is generally of yellowish or greenish in colour and if white,it will not be watery. It will have its consistency just like curd. The white discharge will be there along with irritation, itching and redness.Any of such symptoms, need medication immediately.
During pregnancy, white discharge is normal due to the increased amount of pregnancy hormones, estrogen and progesterone. This increased amount of hormone, increase the blood flow around the uterus and cervix, because of which during pregnancy, the colour of cervix changes from light pink to light blue. Also, this increased blood flow keeps the cervical and vaginal muscles soft.
But during the last month of pregnancy, the discharge consistency changes to mucus along with some blood strains. This indicates that you have entered in your labor period and immediate doctor’s consult is needed.
REASON FOR INCREASED BLOOD FLOW
The reason for increased blood flow includes the good growth of baby. The increased weight of baby pressurizes the cervix area resulting in white discharge.
Secondly,as the baby will grow with every passed day,the size of uterus will also grow, hence, for the proper growth and pregnancy, there should be a proper level of blood circulation around uterus.
Thirdly, the increased progesterone level will increase the mucus secretion outside the cervix which acts as a safety layer and provides protection from infection to the baby and mother’s cervix. This protective mechanism works throughout the whole pregnancy period. It protects the birth canal from any sort of bacterial or yeast infection and maintains good bacteria region for the baby.
